Dragon Fruit Production

The production of dragon fruit in the eco-community of Uxuxubi has grown, as 10 more hectares have been authorized, said Miguel Panni Can, tourism cooperative president. The first crop will be ready in a year and a half. Three tons of the product are estimated for each hectare of land. Commercialization will, at first take place only within the community, as other markets are found.

The vocation of Solidaridad, located 13 kilometers from Akumal, has changed from being entirely tourism to include other occupations, as crops such as habanero chili pepper, mango, cilantro, tomato, sour orange, lime and honey are starting to be produced. Four organic orchards are also being started for local consumption, giving Uxuxubi the potential for a successful harvest.
